2025 Q3 - Biphasic Summer

No disrespect to Brat Summer…
…but 2025 for me was Biphasic Summer! Listen, I love L.A. I love summer. I love sunshine and warmth. And I also love hiding in cool dark corners like a storytelling spider, weaving tales in the dark of night, no (well, fewer) fans or air conditioners messing with my microphone. No neighbors, construction, leaf-blowers, traffic, or airplanes slowing down my flow. I am a narrator of the night!
I have been so fortunate to be booked solid all summer. Back-to-back and overlapping projects keeping me distracted from missing my partner, and helping me cover the bills in his absence. But with the heat of a SoCal summer, this means I’ve also adopted a new sleeping schedule so that I can maximize the coolest times of day for work.
Dividing up my sleep between the morning and evening rush hours, I reap the benefits from working from home: when commuters are all trapped in traffic, I’m getting in my REM!
Apparently, it was common for humans all over the world to have biphasic sleep before artificial lighting. People would go to bed near sundown, then get up around midnight to tend the fire and do domestic tasks, before going back to sleep to wake at dawn. Although my body still prefers the modern day circadian rhythm of sleep, I find I don’t much mind a biphasic summer. High temperatures always make me drowsy and downright brain drained. Instead of fighting a mid-afternoon nap, I look forward to it now!
And honestly, any small bit of agency I enact with intention also feels like a win for freedom these days; a small reminder to myself of the power we each have inside.
It might hurt to be awake in these nightmarish times, but damn it, my sleep is going to be BRAT. 😅
