I never felt so represented in a book as in GAYSIANS by Mike Curato. Because I have been each of the four main characters: the baby-gay new to the big city, excited but overwhelmed; the overconfident slut capitalizing on their youth and vitality while they can; the gamer who is a badass online, but pining over an unrequited love IRL, and the vivacious femme who discovers she is Trans through her art.
If you watched Queer as Folk as an Asian Queer and thought, “Wow, this is great but the ’folk’ sure is white.” Or ugly-cried watching The Joy Luck Club. Or watched Pose and wondered what that might be like for Queer Asian folx, then GAYSIANS is very much for you. And even, I’d argue, for everyone else! The book captures quite authentically much of what being “Gaysian” in 21st century America feels like — I’ve personally experienced some version of nearly every scene in the book! This is the book I needed when I was younger. (I mean, obsessively re-watching Margaret Cho specials only gets one so far!)
The graphic novel is absolutely beautiful; I am so proud to be part of the audiobook adaptation. Many, many thanks to Melanie Schmidt at Hachette Audio for this title. And happy release day to my amazing castmates Earl T Kim, Dustin Vuong Nguyen, Shawn K. Jain, Telly Leung, Greg D. Barnett, Katrina Reese Curato, Dara Brown, Susan Moon, and the author, Mike Curato.
Cheers!
