AUDIOBOOK RELEASE: Gleanings
Nicky reads Sci-Fi stories from New York Times bestselling author Neal Shusterman
Reading three short stories for GLEANINGS was a real treat for me, friends. First of all, the writing is superb. Secondly, I fell in love with the characters I got to play. And thirdly, short fiction is my favorite kind of literature! I love the economy and focus of it, how it can be satisfying without being drawn out.
The New York Times bestselling Arc of the Scythe series continues with thrilling stories that span the timeline. Storylines continue. Origin stories are revealed. And new Scythes emerge!
There are still countless tales of the Scythedom to tell. Centuries passed between the Thunderhead cradling humanity and Scythe Goddard trying to turn it upside down. For years humans lived in a world without hunger, disease, or death with Scythes as the living instruments of population control.
I’m excited to listen to all twelve of the stories in this book – a great selection for those both new to the “Arc of a Scythe” Series, as well as for existing fans. If you’re anything like me, the fan wiki alone made me want to read the other books! The three stories I narrate are…
“Unsavory Row” – an exploration of what it is to be an “Unsavory” in a world where humanity has created everlasting life and the world is ruled by a benevolent artificial intelligence, the Thunderhead.
“Cirri” – chronicles humanity’s long voyages through space… and its dangers
“A Dark Curtain Rises” – where I voice a character who appears in “Cirri”
Without spoiling anything, I can just say I think I’m a bigger sci-fi fan than I thought! If you’re more a lover of “Love Death and Robots” sci-fi than “Star Wars” sci-fi, (or equal love for that matter) you’ll love this book.
And although I’m very much against AI replacing human voices, I do so love it when humans voice AI. What humans create is a reflection of ourselves. Especially in storytelling, I think it’s an essential ingredient to any sci-fi tale with AI for it to be performed by a human, because you can still direct the performance, play with the ambiguity of the AI as a well-rounded character or just a program with sounds.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did/shall! Can’t wait to hear the other stories in it! Check it out here.
