AUDIOBOOK RELEASE: I Hope We Choose Love
A Trans girl's notes from the end of the world
Narrating I HOPE WE CHOOSE LOVE has made me a big fan of Kai Cheng Thom. Her writing has a passion, clarity, and humility that resonates with me quite deeply. She writes in a conversational-yet-academically-informed style, and does a great job of making big, complicated ideas feel accessible.
In this collection of essays and poetry, Thom explores, interrogates, and imagines her own social justice communities of the “radical left” and is critical — and fair — about how idealism, perfectionism, and trauma can undermine progressive efforts and social bonds. In all of her work in this book, her underlying thesis is the empowering belief in the ability to grow, to heal, and to choose love, even when (especially when) confronted with the injustice and oppression baked into social/economic/political systems.
As a fellow Asian Trans femme artist, it was an honor to narrate Thom’s words. I felt very connected to her; it was easy to step into her shoes for the pieces in this book. Definitely add it to a Pride listening list!
Many thanks to the team at Tantor for this title!
