This book is special for me.
Translated from Korean, the translator for WALKING PRACTICE, Victoria Caudle, was still able to emulate some of the orthographic nuance of the poetic Korean text on the page, in English. In narrating this book — whose protagonist is a shapeshifting alien — I had the honor and artistic challenge of once again translating this story. This time, from English textual translation to English auditory performance. The text uses language (as the translator notes, even moreso in its original Korean) that transcends the page, and so I had a blast trying to capture that as auditory performance.
I really took my time with narrating this book and directing myself. It felt like such a perfect fit for me: thematically, stylistically and artistically. It’s unconventional, ponderous, dark, funny, playful, sad, and sexy. And with action! And transformation! It felt very intimate, personal.
As a professional narrator, I get to read a lot of books and it always feels amazing when I fall in love with a book I might not have otherwise discovered on my own. Check out this audiobook and give it some love!
