RELEASE! "How You Get Famous"
A madcap adventure through a tight-knit world of drag performers making art and mayhem in the greatest city on earth.
Happy Pride Month, y’all!
If you’re looking for a Queer Nonfiction to read this month, try the book I just narrated. I captures the Brooklyn drag scene over the last decade, up to the pandemic era we’re now, unfortunately, still in.
I learned a lot working on this book — how the Brooklyn drag scene is the experimental, bold, innovative stepchild to the high-femme traditions of classical drag; and how the irreverent, avant-garde, and even grotesque is the creative lifeblood of the scene.
The book tracks several iconic Brooklyn queens, their hopes & dreams, their troubles and disappointments, their hustle and work ethic, and their community building. And of course, the celebrity of it all. But celebrity isn’t just an ego-feeding pipe-dream, it’s a practical resume-booster, a way to make a living as a drag artist.
Pasulka captures the grit and glamour really well! I laughed out loud a lot; I had a really fun time narrating this book. Although I must admit, it really tested my attestation of “loving auditorily-naturalistic but visually nightmarish compound sentences.” 😅
