2023 Q3 - Summer of Strikes

Hi, Friends! I am so happy to be writing this newsletter just after the WGA and AMPTP have reached a tentative deal and the WGA is suspending their own picketing, but still picketing with SAG-AFTRA in solidarity until we can make a deal as well.
During this summer of strikes, picketing with my fellow actors and in solidarity with the writers, I felt proud to be an artist. And grateful to be a part of a collective voice of artists who are coming together to show our power and value as collaborators who are deserving of fair wages, reasonable share in the profits of success, and protection from exploitation and AI.
I also have never felt more confident in my own voice as an artist, the conviction in being an artist, and the capacity for generosity I can contribute as part of a team. Being a professional artist is hard! One must have both grit and a thick skin, as well as sensitivity and vulnerability to do what we do, especially actors, for whom our very bodies and nervous systems, faces and voices are judged and rejected as a baseline condition of our jobs. But I live for storytelling, and in particular, what I believe is the enrichment of humanity by diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
I am both anxious and excited to see what comes next in the entertainment industry. But in any case, I plan to show up with my best. Thank you for reading my newsletter and for caring about what this particular artist is up to!
